Harfield Harriers (Ha-Ha) is a small young running club based in Newlands. In 2004 Ha-Ha was given the opportunity to host The Milkwood 21 after the race lost its traditional March April timetable slot following a clash with a cycle race. This year the race returns to its summer slot and Harfield Harriers will be hosting the race for the second time in 8 Months, on Sunday 10 April. In addition to the half marathon there is a 10 kilometer event this year, which, it is hoped, will attract runners and walkers who want a taste of the spectacular new Milkwood route, arguably the most beautiful route in the Western Cape. For the second year the race is benefiting from the generous sponsorship of Sterling Light Lager.
Both the 10km and the 21.1 km are very scenic out and back routes starting and finishing near the tidal pool in the Soetwater Recreational Area - the hidden peaceful camping and surfing spot between the crayfish factory and the Kommetjie Lighthouse. Both routes head past the lighthouse into Kommetjie and do a loop past the 'Kom' before heading up the challenging Slangkop pass. 10 Km participants turn back into the Soetwater recreation area at the bottom of the Slangkop pass at the Slangkop Road, Main Road and Lighthouse Road intersection. The 21.1km route continues on along Main Road through Misty Cliffs and into Scarborough, turning back at the beach just after the 11 km mark. The final turn, into Lighthouse Road, back down towards the crayfish factory and Soetwater Recreation Area mean a fast flat finish next to the crashing waves. Cut off time is 2 hours for the 10km runners and walkers and 2.5 hours for the 21.1km participants. The staggered start of the races (06h30 for the 21.1 and 07H00 for the 10km) means both races cut off at 09H00. Participants are encouraged to make a day of it and to bring their families and a braai or simply stay to enjoy the prize giving (which will include excellent spot prizes) and the tidal pool.
Apart from a prize for every participant in the races and the spot prizes there is a trophy and a prize on offer (which will include cases of Sterling Light Lager and the right to choose a charity, from a selection of nominated charities, to benefit from the proceeds of the race) for the club with the highest percentage members pre entered for the races.
Harfield Harriers have chosen the JDI Foundation as their beneficiary from the Race. The JDI Foundation will make sure that proceeds from the race and any sporting goods donated by participants in the race find their way to organizations in the Masiphumelele, Lekkerwater and Ocean View communities. In addition it is hoped that development clubs from Khayelitsha and Guguletu will be provided with transport to the race to so that members of those clubs can enjoy the races too.
