The Milkwood has, in a short period, become a
legend on the Cape running calender. It is set in the picturesque
Kommetjie area. The runners start with the sound of crashing waves
in their ears from the Soetwater Recreational area next to the Kommetjie
lighthouse and takes in the Kommetjie town, the Slanghoek pass,
Mistycliffs and Scarborough along it’s path. The run finishes
at Soetwater again where they, together with their families, enjoy
the tidal pools and the grass banks while the main sponsors, Sterling
Lager, dish out their soothing nectar. A feature of the race is
the “medal” that all finishes receive – an indigenous
plant to keep reminding you of your achievement for years to come.
This year the race will be run on 22 April, two
weeks after Two Oceans, when all runners are fit and aiming to maintain
their fitness into the winter months. If the weather plays along
as it did last year it is well worth the drive out there to enjoy
the setting and the entertainment. It is definitely a day for the
whole family as there is a race for every level of fitness –
half marathon for the fit ones; 10kms for the “getting fit”
category and a 5km fun run for the baby-jogger pushers and slow
walkers. Foods, wine and beers stalls will be available as well
as a jumping castle for the kids.
Most of the profits raised go to our charity
– Great Commission United – a great bunch of guys who
do good work in Langa township keeping kids playing sport and away
from drugs and gangs.
